Simple, distinctive, traditional modern, in fashion … and almost 200 years old!! These fabrics were made by Sarakatsanoi of the past and belong to their descendants that live in Megalo Papigo.

Sarakatsanoi (Σαρακατσάνοι) are an ancient nomad Greek tribe that lives between Evros and the Northern Peloponnese. During summer they would ascend to the mountains with their herds and stay there until the end of October, when they would again descend to their winter, warmer pastures.

The Sarakatsana woman would weave most of the day at the loom to cater for the family needs in clothing and work accessories. After the «Kouros», sheep shearing (Κούρος in Greek), the carding, the spinning and the weaving of the wool she would make the clothes. The Sarakatsanoi only wore fabrics of their own making. Their decorative designs were predominantly geometric, with a direct link to their environment and their beliefs. A simplicity also explained by their Dorian heritage as one theory has it. Characteristic is the severity of the dark colours in their costumes.
